Books I read in March 2024

Please appreciate this break in romance. It is short lived!

Surviving to Drive: A Year Inside Formula 1: An F1 Book by Guenther Steiner

We are only four races into the new year and I miss Guenther Steiner and his commentary and reaction. Before reading this book I hadn’t realized how much of a hand Guenther had in setting up the Haas F1 team so it definitely left me disappointed in hearing how he was treated. I loved reading the book and it definitely felt like a glimpse in Guenther’s mind and it gave me a deep appreciation for his expertise, one that I was lacking from watching him at race weekends and in Drive to Survive.

Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas

I appreciated this book A LOT MORE than I had Deluxe by the same author. Maybe it’s because I knew less about the topics at hand: the impact of fast fashion on the environment. I knew the overall concept fast fashion is hard to recycle and is thrown away often with labels on and as a result a pollutant but I didn’t know about how environmentally damaging making denim is for e.g. This was definitely a more enlightening read for me.

We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story by Simu Liu

I listened to this book as I was doing errands and on my daily walks and it definitely had me in the feels. Hearing about Simu’s persistence to be non conformative to Asian standards and the rift it caused between him and his parents is a nostalgic story to many an Asian child. These relationships never sever but do take a beating and come back resilient and as someone who has had that journey with her parents it was a heart warming book to listen to.
