Travel upgrades I have made

How I travel hasn’t changed in the pat 6 years or so (modulo COVID). So I thought I would share things I do to make travel easier on myself:

Packing

  • I create a copy of my packing template for each trip and then add trip specific things like clothes, accessories, etc. This makes it easy for me to know what to pack.

  • Use packing cubes

  • Have a separate set of toiletries for travel to cut down on packing time and frustration.

  • Have a separate set of chargers for traveling.

  • Audit and refill things when unpacking (e.g. shampoo, tooth paste, etc).

  • I pack a change of underwear and socks in my carry on in case my luggage goes missing.

  • Have air tags in each check in bag.

Getting there

  • I have Global Entry which gets me TSA Precheck making getting through airports easy.

  • Try to book on an airline where I have status so I can get free checked bags.

  • Confirm what lounge I can access and add myself to the waitlist if possible and free to do so.

  • Have a dedicated passport holder with all my travel documents.

  • For long flights or those with layovers I make sure to pack toiletries like face wash and some tooth paste and a tooth brush to make sure I can freshen up if needed.

During the trip

  • Get an eSIM using Airalo since its easiest to use and I can install it before I get to my destination.

  • Unpack toiletries into the bathroom and then the rest of the stuff doesn’t leave my suitcase.

  • Pack any purchase into the suitcase at the end of the each day so I know how much luggage space I have during the trip.
